The Attractive One (2004)

Joe Ma Wai-Ho produces sly, funny romantic comedy directed by Matt Chow Hoi-Kwong. Lau Ching Wan stars as a gruff and grubby restaurant owner named Hugo, as in “Boss Hugo” or “Hugo Boss”. That’s the level of the innocent, dumb humor on display. Lau’s work here ranks among his best comedic performances.

Co-starring the seemingly ever-present Chapman To Man-Chat, director Chow seems especially sympathetic to his character and his relationships with his boss Hugo and the girl he dreams about, played by Yumiko Cheng Hei-Yi. Production design and art direction are outstanding. Cinematography by veteran Ko Chiu-Lam is superb; his use of color is spectacular.
